In 2007 Lien graduated magna cum laude in Germanic languages at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with a thesis on the quantitative evaluation and overall perception of Dutch language proficiency of Flemish and Brussels Dutch speaking students. In 2008 she obtained an additional master's degree in cultural sciences from the same university with a thesis concerning the European policy on multilingualism and subtitling in the European audiovisual sector as a policy on cultural diversity. In September 2008 she joined SMIT as a junior researcher and she is involved in several projects concerning culture in a network(ed) society.
